Ionic Presence: Conductivity increases with the concentration of ions, such as sodium (Na+), chloride (Cl-), calcium (Ca²+), and magnesium (Mg²+). Pure water has very low conductivity because it contains few ions.
Measurement Principle: Conductivity is measured by applying an alternating current (AC) through two electrodes placed in the water. The resulting current flow between the electrodes is used to calculate the conductivity.
Cell Constant: The geometry of the electrodes (distance and surface area) is defined by the cell constant, which is a factor in the calculation of conductivity. Different electrode configurations will have different cell constants.
Temperature Influence: Conductivity is temperature-dependent; as temperature increases, ion mobility increases, leading to higher conductivity readings. Therefore, measurements are often temperature-compensated.
