Accurate Residual Chlorine Measurement
Accurate chlorine measurement, especially in water treatment or monitoring, is typically based on electrochemical or colorimetric methods. Below is an explanation of both approaches, which are widely used for measuring chlorine levels.
Electrochemical (Amperometric) Method
The electrochemical method uses a sensor or electrode to measure chlorine concentration. This technique involves the oxidation or reduction of chlorine at an electrode surface, generating a measurable electrical current proportional to the chlorine concentration.
- Free chlorine (Cl₂) or hypochlorous acid (HOCl) in the water sample reacts at the surface of the electrode.
- Two electrodes (a working electrode and a reference electrode) are immersed in the sample. Chlorine is reduced at the working electrode, creating an electric current.
- The magnitude of this current is directly proportional to the concentration of chlorine in the solution.
Electrochemical sensors often have a membrane that selectively allows chlorine to pass through and reach the electrodes. This method is sensitive and provides continuous real-time monitoring, commonly used in industrial and municipal water treatment systems.
